It may not be so well known, however in the West there wasn’t history of pattern-dyeing such as resist-dyeing techniques until the modern age. For the most part, textiles were embellished through weaving or embroidery. In Europe, the history of pattern dyeing began when dyeing techniques were imported from India and Indonesia. For example, in 1835 Indonesian dyers were invited to Leiden, Holland where a batik textile company was established. The history of Japan’s textile dyeing is also deep, with three kinds of resist-dye techniques (sankyo) dating back to the Nara Period： kokechi (tie-dyeing), rokechi (wax resist dyeing) and kyokechi (clamp resist dyeing).　In Japan, we use the term senshoku (dyeing and weaving together) and in Indonesia, the terms batik (dyeing) and ikat (weaving) are separate. However, this way of categorizing isn’t found in the West. At the center of textile dyeing is Kyoto, proud of its history of over 1000 years and now leading the world in contemporary dyed art. The Somé Seiryuten exhibition will introduce to you the dyed art of Kyoto’s currently active artists working in a variety of styles, techniques, materials etc.
